Decree No. 102/2020/ND-CP stipulating the Vietnam Legal Timber Assurance System (VNTLAS) was approved by the Government on September 1, 2020 and takes effect from October 30, 2020.

According to the Decree, timber that is at risk to be imported into Vietnam falls under one of the following criteria: timber in the Appendix to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora; Wood on the List of endangered, precious and rare species of forest plants and animals, group IA, group IIA; List of endangered, precious and rare species prioritized for protection according to regulations; wood imported into Vietnam for the first time; timber is threatened with extinction in the country of illegal exploitation or trade as stipulated in international treaties to which Vietnam is a contracting party.
